Architecting KPollZone: Real-Time Election Analytics Under Heavy Traffic

Handling thousands of concurrent voters on Kerala election night with Next.js 15, edge caching, and interactive GIS visualization.

Kerala's political arena is intensely competitive. During municipal and assembly elections, public demand for live, constituency-by-constituency data generates brutal traffic spikes that crumble conventional database-backed web apps. With KPollZone, our mandate was straightforward: zero downtime, live visual swing trends, and sub-100ms cold fetches.

The Surge Traffic Dilemma

Traditional polling portals query relational databases for every incoming user request. At 50 concurrent requests, that's fine. At 15,000 simultaneous visitors refreshing live margins, standard database connection pools exhaust in seconds.

Instead of hitting PostgreSQL for every client request, we decoupled live data ingestion from user delivery. Inbound booth returns are verified by election coordinators and committed to PostgreSQL with row-level transaction guarantees. Simultaneously, an event trigger pushes updated tally snapshots to an in-memory Redis cache with an atomic version tag.

INSIGHT

By decoupling the ingest pipeline from client read-replicas, our database CPU utilization hovered under 14% even during the 8:00 AM election morning counting rush.

Next.js 15 Server-Driven Caching Architecture

We leveraged Next.js 15's incremental static revalidation with stale-while-revalidate headers. Constituencies are categorized into 'hot' (counting underway) and 'settled' (final declaration confirmed).

Hot constituencies invalidate every 15 seconds via on-demand tag revalidation, while settled districts are cached statically at CDN edges indefinitely.

lib/election-cache.ts
typescript
// On-demand revalidation trigger on election result push
export async function pushConstituencyUpdate(constituencyId: string, votes: VoteTally) {
  await db.voteTally.update({
    where: { constituencyId },
    data: votes,
  });

  // Revalidate edge tag instantly for thousands of active listeners
  revalidateTag(`constituency-${constituencyId}`);
  revalidateTag('statewide-summary');

  await redis.publish('election:live-feed', JSON.stringify({
    constituencyId,
    timestamp: Date.now(),
  }));
}

Vector GIS Mapping Without Client-Side Lag

Rendering 140 intricate assembly constituency boundary polygons in standard SVG crashes mobile web browsers. We converted spatial shapefiles into optimized TopoJSON matrices, simplifying boundary precision by 30% without visible fidelity loss.

This brought the total boundary asset size from 8.4MB down to 142KB, allowing interactive choropleth hover inspections at a steady 60 FPS on mid-range Android devices.

Key Takeaways for High-Stakes Portals

1. Never let client read spikes reach your primary transactional datastore.

2. Optimize spatial payloads at build time — raw GeoJSON is never meant for mobile wire transmission.

3. Visual clarity beats ornate design during high-stress live events: high-contrast badges, unambiguous trend deltas, and zero layout shift.
